Aug 7, 2025 – Clearer ERD, AI-Ready Metadata MCP, Smarter Metrics, and more

July’s update brings big improvements to how you explore and operationalize your data. We’ve launched a redesigned ERD experience, added support for AI tools via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), improved metric generation, and expanded support for dbt — all to make Select Star faster, smarter, and easier to use.

✨ What's New

🗺️ New ERD - Clearer Diagrams For Your Data Model

We’ve redesigned the Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) to deliver a more streamlined experience that to navigate your data tables.

The new ERD experience includes:

  • Editable edges — Hide noisy joins and focus on meaningful relationships,

  • Mini-map navigation, zoom, undo, and improved sidebar — Get around large diagrams without losing your place.

  • And more intuitive node interactions (highlighting, collapsing) — Focus in and out of specific areas without visual clutter

It’s faster, easier to explore, and just nicer to look at. 🤩 Want to learn more? Check out our docs.

🧩 MCP Server – Trusted Metadata Context For Your AI Workflows And LLMs

Select Star now supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — a new open standard that lets AI agents securely access your catalog’s trusted metadata.

With Select Star’s MCP Server, you can:

  • Let agents like Claude, Cursor, or your own internal copilots access column-level context, lineage, and docs

  • Answer questions with metadata that stays fresh and governed

  • Build smarter, more reliable AI workflows on top of Select Star

Improvements

📊 Metric Generation – Smarter, Cleaner, More Reusable

We’ve made big improvements to how metrics are auto-generated and organized in Select Star:

  • Metric Views: Sub-metrics like MTD, YTD, and YOY are now grouped under a shared base metric

  • Better formulas: We improved SQL, dimensions, and field references in generated metrics

  • Easier to read: Metric names are now more natural and consistent

These updates reduce noise, boost accuracy, and make metrics easier to trust and reuse.

🔐 IP Filtering – Restrict Access By Network

Enterprise admins can now restrict access to Select Star by approved IP addresses or CIDR ranges. This helps meet security and compliance requirements by ensuring only users on trusted networks can log in or access the API.

🔗 dbt Identifier Support – Smarter Lineage For Source Tables

Select Star now supports dbt’s identifier field, improving how we connect dbt sources to warehouse tables. Even if your physical table names differ from your dbt model names, lineage and warehouse links will now be mapped automatically.
